MRT
It was crowded and i was standing in the middle of the segment. Couldnt help noticing those seated were all fast asleep. A skinny young chap with stereo headphones was one of them. After many stations, in came an elderly (about 60 odd) lady who walked over to stand with me. I was thinking who would give up their seat for her. She was much faster than me. She spotted the young boy (who happened to wake up at that instance). Signalled to give up his seat for her. I believed she spoke but he couldnt hear..... haha.. .neither could i coz i was on earphones too! But i knew what was going on. His face was blur, as in he didnt know why she signalled to him and neither could he comprehend what her actions meant. After 2 tries, she spoke something and he took down his headphones to hear. The lady next to her helped to ask the boy to let elderly sit. Then his face was totally expressionless....hmmm..... should i say he was unhappy to be asked to give up his seat. He should feel pretty ashamed about himself for his reaction. Grudgingly, he stood up and looked around as if looking for someone else more deserving to give up the seat. The elderly lady smiled at him and thanked him but once again, he was expressionless. Neither did he talk nor signal a gesture back. He stood next to me now. How old is he? 15 or 16 the most. Argh..... What happened next made me more disgusted.
The elderly lady reached her station. She signalled to him to thank him once again and asked him to take his seat back. SAME EXPRESSION.... no feelings, no indication, nothing! U know what i mean? It is not the kind of face that irritates and we feel like slapping. It is also not the face that deserve a punch.... but this is one time that i felt like scolding him for such ungracious act and behaviour. Ah beng? Probably.....the way he dressed. He stood where he was and didnt take the seat back. The elderly lady gave it to the lady who helped her to ask for a seat.
BUS
Yesterday i took 67 to church. At 4.15pm, it was jam-packed. As the bus came to a stop and the door opened, a man (in his 30s) fell. He was standing at the front of the bus. I didnt know why but i deduced the floor area in which he placed his feet were really cramped and so he kind of toppled over and fell backwards. NO ONE.... NOT A SINGLE ONE helped him. He was far from my reach, besides, i couldnt help much coz no strength to pull him up too. My point is, those standing behind him could have stopped his fall. It was gradual. It was not fast. The young teenager girl and her friends stood beside him and smiled as he fell slowly. I didnt believe what i saw. Those people at the back? They probably just pushed and squeezed more and opened a big gap for him to fall backwards. If only someone just reached out and pull him back or supported him, he wouldnt have fallen.
SIGH......perhaps what i saw was random. These young people do not know how to react. Adults too for that matter. The other adults sitting down in MRT could have given up their seats for elderly lady and not wait for the young chap to respond. Ugly Singaporeans..... yah. Maybe they are not even Singaporeans..... the point is, where is the civic-mindedness? I wonder......
